All In a Name....

Sitting with my friend the other afternoon....basking in the sun...watching our respective small sprites frolicking amongst the swings and monkey bars....(mine of course has to test the taste and texture of the local twigs and dirt).....

the natural course of our conversation moves to names....namely due to her present situation of a new addition to their adorable little family....

I always have a little excitement when it comes to naming.....naming babies....naming pets.....I even got really excited when Juice and I named our first married plant Julio....we are now on Julio III (we go through one a year)....

There is something amazing that comes with a name....importance, meaning....legacy....any or all can piggy back along.....making a name much more...than just a name.....even if said name comes from a page out of steamy smut novel....(there is definitely some importance attached there somewhere).....

Take my name....My lovely parents...couldn't seem to agree on a name....well I take that back...they had a name...but I like surprises....and surprise...I was a girl....and poor Anthony Foster got thrown out with hopes of football scholorships...and good facial hair....

After as I see it...days of deliberation...and stale mates....my paternal grandmother piped in and said....let's name her after her grandfather.....and either from lack of sleep...or the drugs in 1979 were pretty good....both parents agreed.....

I love the story....though I never met the man......

Take Pooh's name....The poor boy may never live it down if he knows the truth....I fell in love as I'm sure millions of other women....and even a few men...(you know who you are) have with a little book/film entitled The Notebook....The story of true love....love lost...love found....love eternal.....and I fell for Noah....those traits that he portrayed....were traits I would want my son to possess.....strength of character, the ability to love with unimaginable depth, integrity....hope....

See...what I find so intriguing...is that I know that the traits I so admire....my son will get from his father...and hopefully me...(minus my propensity for chaos and clutter)....and not from a name that comes from a book or off the screen....

yet here I reasoned...."Well....you can't be a bully and be named Noah" ...."Just look at The Notebook....That is a great Noah"....

at least I didn't name him Fabio......

So....

What's the Story Behind your name?

It's so funny you wrote about this because two nights ago someone asked me the same thing in a comment they left. I'd never explained my name on my blog before then so here's the response I gave her:

I was named after a friend of my mother's who was also Dominican. Though our name is spelled this way (lucky me) it's derived from Dorcas which appears in the New Testament of the Bible. (Side note: I've never actually read the whole thing and only just learned the meaning of my name several years ago. I could've saved myself a lot of grief if I had something to answer back to those bullies.)

Anywho, Dorcas was a dressmaker who lived in Joppa, was kind and cared for the orphans, widows and poor in the town. In turn, she was very loved. When she grew ill and died, everyone mourned her death and were very upset.

Peter was in a town nearby performing miracles and though he hadn't brought anyone back to life, Dorcas' friends summoned him to where her body was laid to rest. After he asked the mourners to leave the room, he prayed to God that he could bring her back from the dead. He told Dorcas (who also goes by Tabitha) to get up and she did.

I'm pretty sure she danced a little jig right after.

And that's the story! (And to this day my parents don't understand what part of my name means in English. Good stuff.)

By the way, I think Noah is such a beautiful name :)

I LOVE the name Noah and I love the film that you took it from...good choice!

I'm named after my maternal Grandmother who I never knew as she died when my mother was in her early 20's. My sister and brother were also named after grandparents.

As I was pregnant I thought of my parents quite a bit...my father who has been gone quite a long time and my mother who helps me so much to this day....and although part of me wanted a fabulous name outside of the family tradition....we finally settled on naming our son after my father...and my daughter after my mother.

My father has been gone 25 years...so it's soo funny to see my little blond, green eyed little boy display the same mannerisms and gestures as his brown haired, brown eyed, very Italian grandfather. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree!

I must say...we do get questioned once a week at least as to why this fair little child has such a big Italian Name - Antonio!

Oh I loved that story about Noah's name.
All I know is that I wasn't given a middle name because my first and last were sooooo long!!

I don't know the story behind my name but my son's name has a cute story. I sold my husband on the "family" name of Reed Warner. I later let him on the fact that I got Warner from Legally Blond. He was less than thrilled. Ah ha.

Noah is a great name! I dreamt my daughter's name before she was even in my tummy. I like to think she named herself, a little cherub whispering in my ear....

my mom decided to name me britteny, back when it was "original". and she freakin spelled it with an -eny... forever plaguing me with a lifetime of having to correct people.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! It's great to see a new face.

I was supposed to be a boy. Nathan James. I was the last of 7 children (3 sets of twins, all three years apart..then I came 10 years later. My Mother swears I'm not an accident! Ha!) I think they named me on the fly. I know I share the same middle name of my Mother and probably the better part of the female population my age.

I like my name tho :)

Saying hello from SITS!

I love names, too. I always thought it would be fun to have the job of giving names to all those cabbage patch dolls.

I don't really have a story behind my name. My Dad liked it and so that was it.

Happy Thursday!~

My Youngest daughter is named Victoria Faith. I was told I would not be able to have anymore children after my eldest, Maya Elizabeth. So being me, I never listened, then 10 years later and to my chagrins i had Tori. We named her Victoria Faith, because I believe that through Faith we have Victory! The eldest actually picked Faith when I told her the story.

My mom's best friends name was Joelle Katherine and Joelle hated her name and went by Kathy. My mom thought it was such a waste of a beautiful name, it became mine.. well the first one :)

My son's was a compromise. I wanted Aiden Joesph. Aiden because I love the name and Joseph after my late-father. My husband wanted the initials to spell A.C.E. - So our son's name is Aiden Chase E-last name ;)
